Indica vs. Sativa vs. Hybrid: What’s the difference?

Walk into a cannabis shop and one of the first things you’ll probably see is Indica, Sativa or Hybrid. But what do those terms actually mean — and should they be the only thing you look at when choosing cannabis?

At Wychwood Cannabis in Toronto, we get this question all the time. So, here’s a simple breakdown.

What Is Indica?

Indica is a term traditionally used to describe cannabis varieties associated with more relaxing, body-focused experiences.

You may hear people describe an Indica as their choice for unwinding or enjoying a quiet evening. However, the word Indica alone can’t tell you exactly how a product will affect you.

The strain’s THC and CBD content, terpene profile, genetics, your tolerance and your own body can all play a role in the experience.

What Is Sativa?

Sativa is traditionally associated with cannabis varieties described as having more uplifting or energizing characteristics.

That’s why you’ll sometimes hear consumers talk about choosing Sativa products for daytime use or social occasions.

But just like Indica, Sativa isn’t a guarantee of a particular effect. Two products labelled Sativa can have very different cannabinoid and terpene profiles.

What Is a Hybrid?

A Hybrid combines genetics from different cannabis varieties and may have characteristics traditionally associated with both Indica and Sativa.

You’ll often see products described as:

Indica-dominant Hybrid
Sativa-dominant Hybrid
Balanced Hybrid

In today’s cannabis market, many strains are hybrids, which is another reason it’s useful to look beyond the Indica/Sativa label.

Look Beyond Indica vs. Sativa

Here’s where cannabis gets interesting.

Instead of choosing a product based solely on whether the package says Indica, Sativa or Hybrid, take a look at the entire profile.

Things worth considering include:

THC & CBD – The primary cannabinoids you’ll see listed on cannabis products.

Terpenes – Naturally occurring aromatic compounds that contribute to the aroma and flavour of cannabis. Common cannabis terpenes include myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene, pinene and linalool.

Genetics – Looking at a strain’s lineage can tell you more about where it came from.

Aroma & Flavour – Cannabis can have citrus, fruity, earthy, floral, gassy, spicy and many other aroma and flavour profiles.

So, Which One Should You Choose?

There isn’t one answer for everyone.

If you’re new to cannabis, don’t feel like you have to memorize hundreds of strain names. Start by looking at the THC/CBD content, terpene profile and product format, and ask questions.

Cannabis can affect everyone differently, so start low and go slow, particularly if you’re unfamiliar with a product.
