How to Get CannSell Certified in Ontario: A Step-by-Step Guide
Interested in becoming a budtender or starting a career in Ontario’s cannabis industry? One of the first steps is completing an approved cannabis retail training program.
CannSell Standard is an online certification course approved by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO). It teaches the knowledge needed to sell cannabis responsibly and work in a licensed cannabis retail store.
Here’s everything you need to know about getting CannSell certified in Ontario.
What Is CannSell Certification?
CannSell is a cannabis retail training program designed to educate employees about Ontario’s cannabis laws, product knowledge, customer safety and responsible sales practices.
Ontario requires cannabis retail workers, managers and retail store authorization holders to complete AGCO-approved training.
CannSell Standard is one approved option and is widely recognized throughout the province.

The course costs $69.99 CAD plus HST, based on the current listed price.
You can complete the training online using a computer, tablet or compatible mobile device.
Step 2: Complete the Online Training
The course generally takes approximately 4–5 hours to complete, depending on your learning pace.
Topics include:
Ontario cannabis laws and regulations
Cannabis products, cannabinoids and terpenes
Responsible cannabis sales
Age verification and identification
Cannabis effects, impairment and safety
Customer service and retail compliance
The course is self-paced, allowing you to work through the material on your own schedule.
Step 3: Pass the CannSell Exam
After completing the training, you’ll take a final exam to demonstrate your understanding.
The exam includes 25 questions, and you must achieve a minimum score of 80% to pass.
If you don’t pass on your first attempt, CannSell provides a retake opportunity. Additional attempts may require a fee.
Step 4: Receive Your Certification
Once you successfully complete the course and exam, you’ll receive a digital CannSell certificate.
You can save a copy and provide it to potential employers when applying for cannabis retail positions.
CannSell Standard certification currently does not expire, although staying informed about changes to cannabis regulations is important.
Do You Need CannSell to Work at a Cannabis Dispensary in Ontario?
Yes. Ontario requires approved training for people working in licensed cannabis retail stores.
Completing CannSell Standard satisfies this training requirement, but certification alone does not guarantee employment.
Retailers may also look for customer service experience, product knowledge, communication skills and an understanding of responsible cannabis consumption.
Can You Get CannSell Certified Without Experience?
Absolutely. You don’t need previous cannabis industry experience to take the CannSell Standard course.
It’s designed for beginners as well as individuals entering the regulated cannabis retail industry.
If you’re new to cannabis, learning about THC, CBD, terpenes and different product formats can help prepare you for the course and future customer interactions.
Is CannSell Certification Worth It?
If you’re interested in working at a licensed cannabis store in Ontario, completing an approved training program is an essential step.
CannSell can help you understand the responsibilities of cannabis retail employees and prepare you for entry-level opportunities.
However, being a great budtender involves more than certification. Product knowledge, customer service and a commitment to responsible sales are equally important.
